Who is Dexter?

With Dexter series 2 now showing on FX, I thought we should look back at series one and discover who the eponymous Dexter is…

  • Dexter works in the Miami police force in the forensics department.
  • Dexter’s foster father worked as a policeman.
  • Dexter is a serial killer, he kills the “bad” killers who escape justice… and they are duly done by what they have done.
  • Dexter knew from a child that he was a killer!
  • Dexter has a killer’s code of ethics. First make sure your scumbag is truly a scumbag, and second, DON’T GET CAUGHT!
  • The only one who has any inkling that something is not quite right about Dexter is Doakes, Dexter’s colleague at the police force.
  • Dexter likes to work in a nice quiet spot.
  • Dexter likes to use animal tranquiliser.
  • Dexter likes cling film… and he uses LOTS OF IT!
  • Dexter is good at cleaning up his mess. He puts the bodies in bin bags and dumps them in the Ocean.
  • Dexter keeps a photo album with a little spot of blood from each of his victims… carefully taken from their cheek.
  • Dexter says: he has no compassion or genuine affection in his life.
  • Dexter has a girlfriend, Rita who was raped (many times) by her ex-husband.
  • Dexter has, or shall we say had a brother, he too was a serial killer.
  • Dexter killed his brother.
  • Dexter is a nice guy… but he is a killer too!

What I find most interesting about Dexter’s character is that his life has been shaped by an event he cannot remember. Due to this event he has to learn to become an imitation of the living, his relationships, such as they are are shaped by his inability to connect. It is his struggle to connect in spite of this invisible handicap, it is his loneliness, that hooks us in and the writer’s brilliance is putting the character in the extreme situation of being compelled to kill. Its groundbreaking television.
